A few weeks ago, I volunteered at the local Farmer’s Market on Holt Rd., Webster, NY as a representative of the ChristLife Program of my parish. Our goal was to invite people to join us for our Fall sessions. This was my first market to visit in Upstate New York. You can read about it (Farmer’s Market, Webster, NY)
On my second visit (two weeks later) while walking through the Farmer’s Market to reach the ChristLife table, I noticed vendors with fresh produce. I didn’t see them the last time, not because they were absent from the scene, but because I was attracted to the artisans. But this time, I remembered: fresh fruits and vegetables! That’s why they’re called Farmer’s Market! (Hehehe) I decided to take a moment to see them.
But first, I went to greet my friends at the ChristLife table and meet some people asking about the program we were promoting. I was advised about the day’s progress.
Then I couldn’t wait any longer. The colorful tables of fresh veggies and juicy fruits caught my eye! I had to escape from the church table to have a better look at the different venues. My first stop was Jason Bliek Farms right across our ChristLife table. Jason the owner was busy helping people choose, pack, and pay for their produce.
His farm is on Route 14 heading towards Lyons, NY. I enjoyed watching two young people working with Jason so diligently responsible and hard-working to move the produce closer to those visiting the table – helping out in any way needed. It’s refreshing to see that kind of work ethic in young people nowadays!
Walking towards the center of the Farmer’s Market, I heard live music played by a five-person band called the Golden Link. Facing them across the other side was Noto Farm with a big truck full of wonderful produce. The two generations of family were working together to please the buyers with their great customer service.
Across the Golden Link and their music, I saw Nell Ruedin and her table promoting pasture raised non GMO lamb farm. She is the proud owner – operator – shepherdess of Bear Creek Bend Farm Ontario NY. Nell Ruedin had a variety of brochures and resources to help people choose what’s best for their family meals. I loved the paperweights decorated with a pasture and sheep! Too bad they weren’t on sale…!.
On the right side of the Golden Link, Natali’s Nursery & Farm Market were busy ringing up purchases of their variety of homegrown veggies. Their place is located in Red Creek, NY.
I took a look further down towards the end of the Farmer’s Market. An assortment of flowers in eye popping colors called me to them like a bee is called to pollen.
I noticed they belonged to the venue representing Harvest Bound Farms from Penfield, NY. They also had a great variety of veggies: corn on the Cob, various greens stacked next to the yellow homegrown Peppers, and (red, orange, yellow) small tomatoes.
Very impressive the fresh produce sold by numerous wonderful vendors from different farms. Though they shared some common vegetables depending on the venue, unique vegetables were available too. (Such as eggplants, beans still in their pods, jalapenos etc.)
Fruits like Donut Peaches, Black Ice Plums and Purple Pears were also up for purchase throughout the vendors.
Finally, I went back to the ChristLife table just in time to help bring down the tarp, close tables, and help them take it to the vehicle. Then my husband came to take me home.
Looking forward to when the pandemic is over so I can travel longer distances and discover other Farmer’s Markets with new people to meet and share with.
It’s exciting to add new pieces of puzzle pieces and at the same time try new experiences. I enjoy thinking what’s next!
